163. FINANCE AND GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE 22nd JULY 2008
Cllr Harper presented the Minutes.
a. Concerning Minute 142 Members received costings and designs for changes to the railings around Drake’s statue. They were disappointed that no costings for a simple repair were tabled, and were unable to make any decisions until they saw them. Some felt that it might be a false economy to repair the railings as they were, but all were adamant that DCC should bear all costs resulting from the damage caused by the changes to the road patterns around the Statue. It was RESOLVED to defer the matter until Mr Halliday of DCC had addressed the Council meeting on 9th September.
b. Concerning Minute 147, in the absence of any other volunteer, Cllr Mrs Govier agreed to attend future Chamber of Commerce meetings.
c. Concerning Minute 151b Cllr Harper was concerned that the minute did not accurately record what he had meant. After some debate about amending the sentence to show the Council supported all commercial ventures in the Parish of Tavistock, Members RESOLVED to delete the second part of the first sentence, that followed ‘….support town centre shops’. Cllr P Sanders wished to make it clear that he had referred to traders out of ‘the centre’ of town in the second sentence. Cllr Mrs Metcalf asked that information about a Christmas Fair held in Lincoln be obtained.
It was RESOLVED that the minutes of this meeting as amended be adopted.
164. TO RECEIVE SUCH COMMUNICATIONS OR REPORTS AS MAY BE SUBMITTED BY THE TOWN MAYOR AND TO PASS SUCH RESOLUTIONS AS REQUIRED.
a. The Mayor informed Members that the civic chain was going to a jeweller for repair and engraving during August.
b. The Mayor informed Members that in addition to a visit to Pontivy in October, he and the Mayoress were invited to Celle to attend the consecration of the parish church, and the installation of a bell on which were engraved the coats of arms of all Celle’s twin towns.
