W.D.B.C. PLANNING AUTHORITY
The Vice Chairman welcomed Ms. Jane Hart, Chief Planning Officer, W.D.B.C. and invited her to 'talk through' the planning systems that, as a Planning Authority, they implemented. Ms. Hart gave a comprehensive explanation of how their Planning Department was administered and said that policy was led by central Government. There were occasions when local conditions made implementation of such policies very tricky to achieve, but the Government was not overly sympathetic.
Questions were put to Ms. Hart, the overriding concern being the number of developments in the town at present. In some cases these were not in keeping with the existing townscape. The Government's requirement of an escalating number of homes targeted to be built and the density of build led to fears of over urbanisation of Tavistock, with insufficient amenities.
Finally, Ms. Hart spoke of the proliferation of advertisement signs that were being displayed on the pavements. In the first instance, the Borough Council would be contacting shops in an effort to have a voluntary de-cluttering of the pavements. If this were not successful, a stronger approach would be implemented.
The Chairman thanked Ms. Hart for attending the meeting and for her excellent talk.
