Rediscovering Tavistock Abbey Project

Tavistock Town Council confirms that the Rediscovering Tavistock Abbey Project is now fully funded and will move into delivery.

Supported by a £249,226 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, alongside funding from Historic England, the Council and Tavistock Heritage Trust, the project represents a significant investment in the town’s historic environment.

Founded in AD 974, Tavistock Abbey played a central role in shaping the town for over 500 years. Although much of the site was dismantled in 1539, its remains continue to influence Tavistock’s layout and character today.

The project will focus on conserving key remains, undertaking archaeological investigations, expanding research, and improving how the Abbey’s story is understood and shared. It will also create opportunities for local people to get involved through community archaeology, volunteering and learning activities.

Delivered in partnership with Tavistock Heritage Trust, the project will help place the Abbey more clearly at the heart of Tavistock’s shared story, ensuring its significance is recognised and accessible to residents and visitors alike.

The Council fully supports this important initiative and recognises the leadership of Tavistock Heritage Trust in driving the project forward and coordinating its delivery.

Residents interested in learning more or getting involved are encouraged to visit the Tavistock Heritage Trust website for further information and updates.
