As Tavistock returns to normal life after another successful Goose Fair, Tavistock Town Council is taking a moment to celebrate both the dedication of its staff and the retirement of a much-valued colleague, Ian Lashbrook, who is stepping down this week after more than 40 years of service.
Goose Fair is one of Tavistock’s most iconic and historic community events, attracting thousands of visitors to the town each October. Behind the scenes, the event involves months of preparation — from processing trader applications and coordinating with emergency services, to setting up road closures, signage, and Park & Ride sites.
The Council’s Works Department and stewards play a vital role throughout the week of the Fair. In the weeks leading up to the event, the Works Team hand-deliver letters to residents, install signage and barriers, and oversee evening setup around the town. On the Tuesday before the Fair, they often work late into the night to prepare for the early start on Goose Fair Wednesday — ensuring everything runs safely and smoothly for visitors and residents alike.
When the stalls shut at 9pm on Wednesday, the clean-up operation begins immediately, with staff and contractors working late into the evening to return the town centre to normal by Thursday morning.
This year’s Fair marked a particularly poignant moment for the Council, as it bids farewell to Ian Lashbrook, one of the longest-serving members of the Works Department. Over his four decades with Tavistock Town Council, Ian has been a cornerstone of the team, contributing to countless events, projects, and community improvements across the town.
The Works Manager would like to personally thank Ian for his hard work and dedication to the Town Council. “Over the years Ian has made a significant contribution to the local community and has become a familiar face to many. It has been a pleasure working with Ian and he certainly will be missed within our team.”
Tavistock Town Council extends its heartfelt thanks to Ian for his many years of hard work and dedication, and to the entire team who worked tirelessly to deliver this year’s Goose Fair — ensuring that this cherished tradition continues to thrive safely for future generations.
