Exciting News for Tavistock: A New Multi-Use Wheeled Sports Area!

Big things are happening in Tavistock! A brand-new destination sports area has been proposed to replace the existing steel-framed skatepark in Benson Meadow, and it’s set to be a game-changer. This innovative project will feature a concrete park designed for a variety of wheeled sports.

Tavistock Town Council, the project’s lead organisation, is delighted to be collaborating with local community groups TaviSkate and Tavistock Youth Café. After a competitive tender process earlier this year, we’re thrilled to announce Canvas Spaces Ltd as the preferred contractor. Renowned for creating vibrant, inclusive public spaces, Canvas is the perfect partner to bring this vision to life.

This £300,000 project is already gaining momentum. It’s being part-funded by Tavistock Town Council and Section 106 funds from West Devon Borough Council, with £90,000 already secured. Now, TaviSkate is teaming up with Canvas to raise the remainder, and that’s where you come in!

Together with Tavistock Youth Café and Canvas, TaviSkate is launching a major community campaign, including a Crowdfunder, to help make this dream a reality. We’re calling on the people of Tavistock and surrounding areas to get behind this exciting initiative. This new facility will be a major upgrade to our beautiful Meadows, a space designed for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

While the plans are still in the early stages and subject to consultation, the goal is clear: to create a high-quality, inclusive space where everyone from beginners to seasoned riders can come together, get active, and have fun. Whether you’re into skateboarding, scootering, or BMX, this park will be for you. Plus, with a concrete design, it’ll be quieter and lower-maintenance, benefiting the entire community.

Now we want to hear from YOU!

As we kick off the consultation phase, Canvas, TaviSkate, and Tavistock Youth Café are inviting skateboarders, BMXers, scooter riders, and community members of all ages and experience levels to get involved. Consultation activities will include visiting schools in Tavistock and the surrounding villages, holding assemblies and focus groups, ensuring young people have a voice in shaping this space.
